How does Google Ads work?

Google is by far the most popular search engine with more than 90% of online searches happening on Google’s search engine. (see the data here).

When people search for you product, or service, your ads are eligible to appear on Google Search and Maps, and across Google’s network of partner sites, depending on the type of campaign you are running.

You will be billed according to your ad type or results, depending on your goal such as when people click your ad to visit your website, call your business, view your product or even get directions to your business location.

You determine your budget, where, and how long, you want to run your Ad campaigns. You can do this yourself or with the help of a Google Partner such as Deep Thought Media.

To run ads on Google, you will need a Gmail account. Alternatively your Google Partner can manage this for you so that you can take the time to focus on your business. How do I get started?

The first question we always ask, is what are your advertising goals that you want to achieve with your Google ads. This will give us a good idea of what type of campaign to recommend.

Google ads helps you reach your target audience anywhere in the world; however, this comes at a cost (cost per click). Your budget will determine your daily visibility and reach.

How much does it cost?

There isn’t a specific cost when it comes to running Google Ads campaigns as each industry or search bid, comes at a different cost per click. When you open your Google browser and perform a search, these searches are referred to as search terms, or keywords.

Think of every search performed on Google as an auction. Each time someone performs a search, imagine there is a room full of people (businesses) bidding for a good position on page 1 of Google so that their ads may be seen. Each search performed is a new auction, and each bid has a different value based on high or low competition bid times which can affect the value.

Each keyword, whether it be a specific word, phrase, or business name etc, have different levels of ‘competition’ and as such, have different values (cost per click).

For example: ‘plumber’ may have a bidding value of around R2 per click while ‘plumber Cape Town’ may have a cost per click of around R15 per click.

We asses each campaign individually and work on an average cost per click of the most relevant keywords for your campaign. From there we work out a recommended budget which helps you determine your monthly spend.

How much do you charge and what are your options?

We have two options when it comes to managing your Google Ads campaigns:

Option 1:

We charge a once-off fee for setting up your Google Ads campaigns based on the amount of hours. Then we consult for you when needed, at an hourly rate. Google bills you directly and we only bill you for any consultation fees.

Option 2: (most popular)

No setup fee is charged, we manage the campaign monthly, Google bills us, and we invoice you monthly in advance. We make sure the campaign is monitored weekly while you focus on running your business.

How do I know my money is being spent on my campaign?

For full transparency, we can share monthly reports with you which contain the exact amounts spent on your campaign within the selected date range.

We bill in advance and we only run your campaigns after we receive payment. Should we have a longstanding trusted relationship with our clients, we run their ads continuously without pause.

Will I receive monthly reports on my Ads campaigns?

For full transparency, we are able to share monthly reports with you which contain the following information:

1) Overview of your campaign for the month – this contains your total amount of clicks, impressions, average cost per click, total cost ex vat and may also contain number of conversions if we have access to your website and analytics to set up conversion goals (these can be phone calls or lead forms submissions, etc)

2) Keyword report – this helps us determine which keywords are valuable and which are not. It will also help us determine your quality score and we may advise you to adjust the content on your website.

What do all the metrics in my reports mean?


Clicks: Each time a person clicked on a link provided or link to your website

Impressions: The number of times your ad was shown to a person

CTR: Click through rate. Clicks vs Impressions – number of clicks on your ad versus the number of times the ad was seen.

Average CPC: Average cost per click

Cost: Amount spent ex vat, in the date range selected.

Conversions: Goal completions

Cost per conversion: How much it cost to complete a goal

Conversion rate: The average number of conversions per ad interaction, shown as a percentage

Where will my Ads show?

Depending on the type of campaign we are running for you:

Search Ads

Will display on the Google Search Results Page (SERP) after performing a Google search. These will be displayed in the search results Ad space which is typically the top and bottom of the page. Your ad may also show in the maps listings area if you have verified your business location on Google and it has been added as a Location extension (This is why you need a Google Ads Expert like Deep Thought Media).

Text ads also have the option of being shown on Google Search Partner sites and the Google Display Network (GDN).

Shopping Ads

These will be displayed typically at the top of the Search Results Page (SERP) and when filtering your Google results to only show Shopping listings. This type of advert is great for online stores who want to show their product and price. These ads are also open to be displayed on the GDN (Google Display Network).

Display Ads

These are rich media ads displayed across various websites on the Google Display Network. We set desired target audiences for observation so that your ads show on websites relevant to your customers. They may also be used to remarket to your customers who have visited your website. Your advert will follow them as a reminder on GDN partner websites.

Max Performance Campaigns

This is a new type of Google Ads Campaign that gives you the best of everything. It will display your advert across all Google products from YouTube, Search Network to Discover, Gmail, Display Network and Shopping Network.


How long does it take for my ads to show?

1 – For DTM to create the campaign: This we can usually get done in a day, depending on the complexity of your campaign. We monitor your campaign very closely in the first two weeks to optimise your keywords, especially with negative keywords (these are keywords tell Google that we do not want to trigger your ad as they waste your budget)

2- For Google to ‘go live’: It can take from a few hours up to 48 hours depending on the approval process for Google to begin serving your ads.

Note: Once the ads start showing, there is a learning phase. This is necessary for Google to develop an ad quality score and build data based on your campaign goals. This will help Google get us the best possible results for our ad campaign goals and budget limitations.

What is the difference between Google Ads and SEO?

Similar to SEO or Search Engine Optimization, Google Ads displays your advert on the Google Search Results Page (SERP).

However, the major difference between the two is that Google Ads is a paid listing (PPC – Pay Per Click) whereas the SEO results is the organic result and does not pay for the result to appear on the page. 

Google Ads result – limited by budget, short term (get onto page 1 of Google faster)

SEO result (Organic result) – not limited by an advertising budget, long term (takes time to rank depending on the level of competition)

It is important to note that many websites who appear in the SEO result organically, employ an SEO specialist to constantly optimise their website for Google, increasing their rankings on Google. Ranking on the first page of Google is always first prize however the process of SEO happens over a long period of time, whereas Google Ads can get your listing on page 1 of Google results instantly.

Will my Ads show on Facebook?

The short simple answer to this question is no. Facebook offers their own advertising network across their various platforms.
